Class 3 Scooter

The Sterling Emerald is a Class 3 Scooter.

This means that it is able to travel at speeds higher than 4mph. 6 or 8mph vehicles must be driven on the road. If driven on the pavement the scooter must be turned down to max 4mph (half speed on speed pot). Although there is no driving test required or mandatory insurance required in order to drive a Class 3 scooter on the road you are still required to observe the Highway Code and it is your legal responsibility to ensure the safety of pedestrians and other road users when driving your scooter.

Do I need to apply for a tax disc?

Class 3 scooters (Emerald, Diamond, Elite XS) that are capable of speeds above 4mph but do not exceed 8mph are required to be registered with DVLA.

Class 3 scooters need to be registered for road use, be licensed in the "disabled" taxation class and display a nil duty tax disc. Unlike ordinary cars, mobility scooters do not need to provide evidence of VED exemption when licensing in the disabled class.

Also, they are exempt from paying the first registration fee and are not required to display registration plates.

In order to register and license a class 3 mobility scooter you will need to

  • Complete form V55/4 and take or send it to your nearest DVLA local office (addresses can be found on the website at www.direct.gov.uk/motoring or in the V100 information leaflet which is available from post offices that issue tax discs or by telephoning 0870 243 0444 – you will need to quote your postcode).
  • Evidence of the vehicle’s newness (form V267) will need to be submitted with the application together with documentation confirming the keeper’s name and address

This evidence of newness (form V267) is provided by the manufacturer (Sunrise Medical) and is supplied with the scooter

Do I need to take out insurance?

Answer:  Insurance for mobility scooters is currently not a legal requirement but it does give peace of mind to know that you are covered for those unforeseen circumstances such as your scooter being stolen, being involved in an accident or even causing injury to another person or property.
